Public information subject files - Feature newspaper columns : Clint Bonner, 1935-1954.

The Alabama Dept. of Archives and History collects and preserves records and artifacts that document the history of the state. Prior to 1981 the dept. maintained numerous vertical files that were created by various divisions within the dept. The subjects and content of these vertical files were determined by countless individuals employed by the dept. from ca. 1920 to 1981. This artificial series consists of newspaper clippings of the regular feature columns by Clint Bonner. There are clippings of "A Hymn is Born," "Alabama Oddities," "Debunking the Bunk, " and a few samples of "They Died With Their Boots On." Born in 1909. Bonner enjoyed a versatile career as an artist, an author, and a businessman. He owned Southeastern Decal and Nameplate Corp. and the Gulf States Art School. The Birmingham native painted the governor's portraits of Chauncey Sparks and James E. Folsom. He also wrote a biography of Commodore Herbert Hartley, skipper of the ocean liner Leviathan. Bonner was an artist for the Birmingham News where many of his nationally syndicated columns first appeared. These features include "Famous Words of Famous People," "Alabama Oddities," "They Died With Their Boots On," (a comic strip based on Ala. outlaw Rube Burrow), "Debunking the Bunk," "A Carol is Born," and "A Hymn is Born." The latter was probably the most widely syndicated of his columns. Each one explored the inspiration and history of a respective church hymn. Bonner died at his Trussville home on 1966 Aug. 27.
